Celebrating Southland Schools

CLASS ACTION: Waianiwa School

In Term 3 we are learning about Force and Motion for Science.

Gymnastics and Dance for P.E.

Road Safety for Health.

Music and Dance for The Arts and parts of the body for Maori.

Along with our Literacy and Numeracy goals.

We held our first Year 7 and 8 information evening last Wednesday, where we shared our prospectus and gave the Parents and Students who attended, a good idea of the options we have available for our Year 7 and 8 students starting in 2021.

These students were also able to view their new hoodies and learn about the leadership opportunities they will have going forward.

An exciting time for all.

In July we held a Back to Basics Maths night.

It was great to see the children enjoying teaching their Mums and Dads some cool basic facts games using dice.

Thanks to Dr Sue Galloway form REAP who motivated 12 of our Senior students.

Sue had our students experimenting the science of Density.

They were so involved many of them stayed during lunchtime to keep exploring and testing their findings.

On Wednesday 12 October we held our annual eis Technology Challenge with full entries for Year 5 & 6 and a good number of Year 7 & 8 teams.

The Technology Challenge is an amazing way for students to create, innovate and test their designs.

It is fun, but challenges each team to work together to come up with a solution and test that it works.

Results were: Year 5&6 1st Thornbury 2nd Lochiel 2 3rd Winton 1 Year 7&8 1st Winton 2 2nd JHHS 1 3rd Otautau .

Congratulations to our winning teams and all those who took part.

On Wednesday 19th August, the whole school visited the Thornbury Vintage Tractor Museum as a part of our Machines - Force and Motion Science inquiry.

We had an awesome experience at the Museum.

From 10.00am - 2.00pm, the children and staff were treated to a wide variety of hands on experiences that helped their knowledge and understanding of machines and how they work.

From this experience we have seen some amazing plans and inventions, as the children have created their own machines back at school.
