Celebrating Southland Schools

CLASS ACTION: Riverton School

COMMUNITY – AROHA – RESILIENCE – ENGAGEMENT

We ended the term with colourful activities, like our book character day.

This term will be filled with action and a buzz of business till the last day of the term.

On the last day of the term we awarded our Westpac, Sir Peter Blake Young Leadership Award.

This years lucky recipient was Martha Eade.

Westpac recognises young people who have shown promising leadership in their schools and communities just like how Sir Peter Blake did for our country.

Martha is an excellent recipient of this award, with her involvement in a number of sports teams for the school and out of school, on the weekends.

Martha always takes part in extra-curricular activities the school offer eg; Young Einsteins, EIS tech challenge-, she has taken part in extra music lessons, taken part in a number of Reap GATE programmes and represented RPS at the Aparima College Anzac Service in 2019 when the Year 6's were away on camp.

Martha spoke at both the school (2018 & 2019) and inter-school Speech Competition in 2018 with Thornbury & RPS.

Martha will take on anything with a can-do attitude.

She will always help others when they need it without anyone asking and is a FANTASTIC role model to all, with many younger students looking up to her and going to her for help in the playground.

In fact when on duty the other day, I asked some younger students what they love about Martha and they said that she is so kind and caring to them all!

When given a job, Martha puts 110% effort into it, she is extremely efficient with her Milk Role.

(I never have to ask her about it).

All of Martha’s work both in class and at home is completed to an exceptionally high standard, she is self-motivated and wants to better than she did the day before.Martha, you have engrained our school values so well of CARE and have so many similar attributes as Sir Peter Blake..

Martha makes a fantastic young leader and I know you will strive and be ambitious just like Sir Peter Blake was!

We had a perfect sunny day to carry out the ShakeOut.

The whole school and the pupils who were on Stewart Island carried out the tsunami drill.

The school walked up to the rest home and entertained the locals.

Thank you to the civil defence for their support and making themselves available for this very important drill.

Ten students boarded an aircraft at 9 am on Tuesday morning and flew over to Stewart Island.

They were in for an action pact few days.

On arrival, they settled into the Backpackers accommodation.

They spent some time walking around Oban to orientate themselves.

DOC showed us a few movies which explain what we were going to see and expect of our time on Stewart Island.

Halfmoon Bay School Ambassadors kindly included us to have a look at their Blue penguin research at Ackers point.

Later that night we were invited to the school's premier movie, popcorn included.

The fishing charter with Shane was fantastic.

We caught blue cod for tea and Diddle kindly cooked it for us at the Kai Kart.

The children went penguin spotting and we saw little blue ones come ashore.

The children really enjoyed the eBike experience.

We were able to see much more of the island and appreciated the landscape even more.

We all got to see kiwi in the wild feeding at night.

Ulva was a place of bird song and spotting many species.

Once we returned from Ulva we took to the waters and kayaked to one of the islands nearby.

Here the children swam and jumped down the sand dunes.

During our downtimes, the kids were down on the wharf fishing for spotty and butterfish.

The walk to Observation Rock was steep but well worth it once we scanned the horizon and took in the sunset.

Dave spoke to the children and explained the art of cutting greenstone at Rakiura Jade.

The ferry ride was interesting, to say the least, with a few young sailors turning green and pale from the bouncy ride home.

They all had a great experience.
