Celebrating Southland Schools
22 September 2024, 8:38 PM
Kia ora Southland App readers,
Welcome to Term 3 in class action at Hauroko Valley Primary School.
2024 is the start of our Mitey journey with Sir John Kirwan’s Foundation and Southland facilitator Belinda.
We are excited to develop our teaching and learning programmes to further build “Healthy Minds and Mighty Kids” (as per the Mitey slogan).
The links align with our Health and Education Programmes, as well as strengthening our children and their Key Competencies in daily life.
Here are some action shots of our children with in-class learning and also outdoors - as learning can take place anywhere!
You will see Key Competencies in use throughout as students engage in Managing Self, Relating to Others, and Participating and Contributing.
What a fabulous bunch of learners out there doing it!

This year 20 students prepared projects for the NZAS Southland Science and Technology Fair.
The students involved had to be committed to completing work at home and school.
There is a lot of preparation involved with log books tracking progress and data and science investigations being followed accurately.
The presentation in itself is a major task with word processing and presentation of headings, subheadings, results in graphs, and photographs.
Congratulations to all students who completed a project for presentation to the judges, and for your amazing enthusiasm in sharing these with NZAS Guest Judges.

It was a fabulous opportunity for our netball teams in Year 5&6 and Year 7&8 to play in the CSCN Festival of Netball in Winton.
Excellent sportsmanship, ball skills, attack and defensive play and shooting was on display.
Also the best dressed!!
Thanks to our Coaches/Managers and Umpires also to supporters and parent help transport providers.
We have combined forces with Western Southland schools including Otautau Primary, Takitimu Primary School and Waiau Area School for a team in the Year 7&8 girls Southland Wide Rugby Competition this term.
Hauroko Valley Primary School girls including Cassie, Maddi, Libby, Lucy, Paetyn, Sienna and Briar have been showing skill and gutsy performances in training and on the field for games.
We look forward to seeing them play at home soon and also at the Jonty Carran Tackle 10’s in November.
Thanks to Coaches/Managers, supporters for your assistance with our team.
Term 3 is always a busy time with speeches, as we relish the opportunity to share our writing with others to inform, persuade or entertain.
Quality well written speeches gave our judges at every level of Year 4-8 a challenge to select the best.
Congratulations to Angus and Isaac who qualified to represent HVP at the Cluster Competition, where both made it through to the Area Final.
Our Year 7&8 speakers selected included Louie and Boe.
Boe then qualified to attend the Area Final.
At the Area Final Boe was placed first in Year 7&8 and has qualified to head to the Southland Speech Grand Finals at the end of Term 3.
While Isaac was fortunate to be invited to attend this years Southland Speech Grand Final, as 3rd place was unavailable to attend.
Good Luck to both boys in their next challenge at this level of the competition - such an amazing achievement!
As always, we thank you for following our in-class action through the Fiordland Advocate/Southland App and look forward to keeping you up to date with Hauroko Happenings!
We are proud of our learning and know that the variety of opportunities, continue to build and extend our learners.
Supporting our tamariki, their well-being and Key Competencies alongside learning, is what we are all about!
Until next time, mā te wa.
