OUTDOOR EDUCATION WEEK
We had a fabulous start to school with our Outdoor Education Week.
The children were involved in numerous activities, focused on fostering friendships, building trust, working as a team, and strengthening tuakana teina relationships.
Tuakana/teina refers to the relationship between an older (tuakana) person and a younger (teina) person and is specific to teaching and learning in the Māori context.Within teaching and learning contexts, this can take a variety of forms: Peer to peer – teina teaches teina, tuakana teaches tuakana, small groups, house groups and class wide.
Some of the activities the children have completed include:
Relay Race events
House Challenges
A boat building competition and boat trials
Team Swim Sports
Orienteering
Yoga
Skipping
Whole School Obstacle Course
Swimming
Use of equipment from Active Southland
Survivor Island Challenge
The week concluded with our Survivor Island challenge, and a shared lunch of American Hotdogs and Chocolate Bomb icecreams.
A huge thanks to all the staff for organising such a fabulous week to start our year, and to the children for being so motivated, engaged and happy.
RUMA PAPA
Ruma Papa had a brilliant Term 1.
The children have done exceptionally well settling into our daily routines.
They completed their self portraits and did some amazing summer flower art.
We have also started our Statistic unit and we will be creating a variety of graphs.
RUMA AWA
Statistics in Ruma Awa was rather ‘CRUNCHY and DELICIOUS’ with the children carrying out statistical investigations using a variety of chippie snacks.
Everyone was fully involved and loved the activity … with the bonus being they could eat their statistical data at the end!
Ka rawe!
Excellent work!
We also held our Annual REAP Swim Safe Programme.
Children involved have learned valuable skills for keeping safe in the water.
RUMA MAUNGA
Art
Ruma Maunga had to first make a background paper using special cornflour paint.
They thought about the colours and textures they wanted to show.
Once that was done they traced themselves onto clear acetate and painted their portraits so the background would show through in parts, and the hair and clothes would pop out.
Can you spot your child?!
Hannah, Aubree and Grace held a very successful Mufti Day for the SPCA.
They collected 2 tubs of Pet food and also raised over $100 from the sale of juices and ice blocks.
The girls are taking their donation to the SPCA.
Thank you for supporting them with their fundraising efforts and Leadership programme.
We now have a beautiful display in our office of the collaborative work of every student in our school.
Individually we designed our own unique hands and together they’ve come together to create a masterpiece!
A big thank you to the Ruma Maunga girls who created the design and put it up for us all to enjoy.
STUDENT COUNCIL PYJAMA DAY
The Student Council is holding a Pyjama, Popcorn and Movie Day on our last day of Term - Wednesday 13 April.
Children are able to wear their pyjamas to school.
Lest We Forget
A service to commemorate ANZAC day will be held on Monday 25 April at 8:15 at the Drummond War Memorial.
If wet, the service will be held at Drummond School.
