The Winton community gathered to mark the official opening of the Central Southland emergency helipad this afternoon (20 Sept).
The community-driven project aims to improve emergency response times and medical transfers for the Central Southland community.
Prior to this, emergency helicopters were forced to land at the Midlands rugby club.
The project, supported by the local Lions and Rotary Clubs, was also boosted by community fundraising, sponsorship, support from local contractors and about 180 public donations.
It was estimated to cost around $100,000.

Southland District Council mayor Rob Scott opened the helipad and said it was a proud moment for the people of the area.
“It’s been an amazing community effort.
“If one life gets saved thanks to this helipad, then it makes the whole project worthwhile.”
The new site, on the corner of Springford and Railway Streets, is located opposite the town's supermarket.
