This exhibition showcases the work of Irish artist James Hanan, 1820-1885 and Invercargill artist Louise Craig.
Hanan built and opened his Temple of Arts & Science in 1878 where Hanan Gallery is located today.
The Temple housed Invercargill’s first observatory.
Hanan gave lectures on astronomy, geology and the evolution of man and used his paintings as teaching aids in his lectures.
Hanan’s paintings were found in the building by chance during renovations in 1996 and 2021.
Hanan’s artwork has inspired an artistic response from Louise in the form of felt art work, which has formed the basis of this exhibition.
Thanks to the Southland Regional Heritage Committee for funding this project.
