Fire crews have responded a car fire inside the Homer Tunnel along the Te Anau-Milford Highway (Milford Road) this afternoon.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand shift manager Ian Littlejohn said they received the first call at 3.43pm.

Crews from Te Anau and Milford Sounds were responded to the call, he said.

The tunnel is currently closed. Contractors are on site and the tunnel will reopen after the vehicle has been cleared and a safety inspection completed.
