Cancer Society's Daffodil Day goes virtual for tomorrow

The Cancer Society can’t tell you how heartbroken they are to announce that due to the current Covid-19 outbreak, the Daffodil Day Street appeal won’t be going ahead on Friday, 27 August.

An online Daffodil Day donation will ensure cancer patients get the support they need right now as they face the extra stress and isolation of Covid-19.

Daffodil Day symbolises hope for all New Zealanders impacted by cancer. This year marks 31 years of Daffodil Day in New Zealand. That’s 31 years of our communities coming together to raise much-needed funds to support people facing cancer.

Daffodils have been symbolically linked to the fight against cancer for many years. Daffodil Day is a day when we’re reminded of the value the Cancer Society adds to the community, and it’s a day for everyone to support this vital cause.

Cancer Society Otago-Southland Chief Executive Rachael Hart said, “Cancer doesn’t stop, and with your help, we won’t either. Every day 71 New Zealanders are diagnosed with cancer. For over 31 years, New Zealanders have supported the work of the Cancer Society on Daffodil Day and we need your help again this year.”

Every dollar raised will help provide free support for people with cancer and their whānau, fund cancer research and deliver health promotion activities to reduce the risk of cancer for future generations.

Every day the Cancer Society provides expert information services, counselling, nutritious meals, accommodation near hospitals, transport to treatment and much more. Your donation helps fund these cancer support services for people in our community, providing practical and meaningful assistance during some of the most challenging times in their lives.

Your donation also helps to reduce the incidence of cancer. The Cancer Society’s Health Promotion Team leads positive change through innovative projects to reduce smoking, reduce alcohol consumption, and deliver Sun-Smart Education programs in the community.

ANZ has been a major sponsor of Daffodil Day since 1990, and in that time, has raised almost $20 million to support the Cancer Society's important work. Each year ANZ staff get involved in fundraising activities that fund services and help New Zealanders with cancer.

ANZ NZ CEO Antonia Watson says: “We’re proud to have supported the Cancer Society for the past 31 years, and our staff are right behind the important work that they do. The Cancer Society is the only organisation that funds research into all types of cancers, and provides support to anyone affected by cancer, including families and friends, no matter what age you are or the type of cancer someone might have. Cancer impacts the lives of most New Zealanders and ANZ New Zealand staff are no different”.

1 in 3 New Zealanders are affected by cancer.
