A search is on to locate a father and son missing near Lake Hauroko.

Alan Mortimore (50s) and his son Danny (14) departed Invercargill on Friday (1 April) with the intention of camping overnight near Lake Hauroko, a family spokeperson said.

The pair were to have returned home at 3pm on Saturday.

Police are concerned for their welfare as it is believed they were ill-equipped for a night out in the bush.

A Police search and rescue team and LANDSAR volunteers commenced a ground search of the area yesterday (3 April).

They were joined by a helicopter using thermol imaging and night vision equipment last night.

The search has resumed again today and has been joined by amateur radio emergency communications (AREC) personnel and search dogs.
