Business and IT courses at SIT Invercargill

Semester 2 enrolments: Business and IT courses at SIT Invercargill

The post-lockdown period is a time of readjustment and rebuilding for New Zealand’s workforce. In some cases, this will mean retraining to meet skill shortages. Working from home is also likely to feature more prevalently and may become the new normal for a number of New Zealanders.

The Covid-19 pandemic has also highlighted the need for modern skills in business and technology, especially in the areas of communications, change management and working with technology.

Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) is at the forefront of training and upskilling, to meet the changing needs of the post-lockdown job market. Offering an unrivalled mix of academic and practical learning, SIT’s connectedness to business and IT ensures those thinking of studying will find courses that are current, relevant and strongly focused on graduates achieving successful employment outcomes.

The strength of SIT programmes lies in the teaching of applied skills, which puts learning into practice in real-world situations. This includes working alongside local businesses or the student’s current employer.

SIT’s range of programme options provide opportunities to study at any level, from Certificates and Diplomas for school leavers or those new to tertiary study, through to Degrees and Postgraduate qualifications, which are more suited to undertake those with existing qualifications to undertake

Business courses are available in specialised areas such as: Small Business Management, Accounting, Administration, and Leadership/Management.

Colleen Barker ascribes to the view of life-long learning and wants to be a positive role model to her grandchildren.

As a grandmother of five, Colleen Barker wants to set a good example to her grandchildren, on how to be a lifelong learner. Colleen recently completed a New Zealand Certificate in Business (Small Business) (Level 4) and ascribes to the belief ‘you’re never too old to learn’.

With a five-decade career in teaching behind her and now in her 60’s, Colleen wanted to continue learning skills to benefit her current role; providing administration support for a business her

family owns. She also teaches English to Korean students and has gained qualifications for this vocation as well.

“I want to feel worthy of the jobs I am assigned by committing to some study that better equips me for the role. It gives me some credibility.”

“I chose SIT because the zero fees made it affordable for someone on a now-reduced income, and the content of the course was perfect for my work in the family business,” she said.

IT courses at SIT range from entry level Certificate in Information Technology Essentials, right through to Postgraduate study which is ideal for those with some IT experience or existing qualifications.

Kyla Pikia's study journey at SIT has made her open to new experiences and taught her how to push herself.

Bachelor of Information Technology graduate Kyla Pikia started her study journey by completing a Certificate in Technical Computing to help her in the decision-making process of whether or not to pursue the subject further. She decided it was the path she wanted to follow and enrolled in the degree. Completing the degree opened Kyla’s eyes to the industry where she now works in software development.

“It made me open to new experiences and taught me to push myself sometimes,” she says.

Kyla had no real expectations beforehand, she just wanted to learn and explore. And her time at SIT provided the opportunity to do so. Throughout the course, she really enjoyed the mix of people, students and tutors she met.

“I really liked the internationals, it was interesting being exposed to new cultures.”
