Southland District Council is seeking views from the community on the draft Alcohol Control Bylaw 2022.

The current Alcohol Control Bylaw 2015 prohibits the possession and consumption of alcohol in specific public places and allows Council to establish areas with temporary alcohol bans within the district as required.

The current bylaw, which is due to expire on 9 December, 2022, was established for the purpose of addressing the problem of crime and disorder related to the consumption of alcohol in specified public places within the district. Under the current bylaw, the only area currently subject to an alcohol ban is central Te Anau.

Council is proposing this will continue to apply under a new bylaw, with no further alcohol ban areas to be added.

Council would like to know what you think, so we are inviting the community to provide feedback by making a submission on the draft Alcohol Control Bylaw 2022.

The submission period runs from 8am on 29 August 2022 until 5pm on 29 September 2022.

Information about the consultation process, including Council’s Statement of Proposal, the draft bylaw and how to make a submission, can be found online at www.makeitstick.nz and at Southland District Council area offices.

A hearing date for those who wish to speak to their submission is proposed for late November.
