$2.2 million from the Government's Transport Resilience Fund has been tagged for SH1 at Bluff's Ocean Beach, to help mitigate the effects of coastal innudation due to rising sea levels.
The $419 million Transport Resilience Fund, part of the 2023 Budget, is a seven-year programme designed to help protect New Zealand State Highways from future weather events and the effects of climate change, by carrying out early preventative work.
Transport Minister David Parker confirmed 94 resilience projects, including the SH1 Bluff Road, on 31st August 2023.
“We know that severe weather events will be an ongoing challenge."
"This fund will help identify and repair vulnerable points in the network to help mitigate the risk of them failing in future storms or other natural hazards,” Parker said.
Work on the current projects is scheduled to start this year.
