Fiordland's Great Walks continue to draw heavy interest from trampers, with the Routeburn Track recording 1730 reservations in the first 15 minutes of bookings opening for the 2022/23 season.
This represents 58% of the tracks 2,983 total booking capacity and follows the Milford Track being spectacularly booked out in just 3 minutes on Tuesday (3 April).
Department of Conservation Booking Services Manager, Ross Shearer said while there is still capacity on the Routeburn across most of the season, bednight bookings were up slightly compared to last year (3% increase for New Zealanders and 40% increase for international customers)
The split between New Zealanders and overseas customers booking onto the track is very similar to Milford Track at 82% Kiwis and 18% international. Australians make up 10% of bednights booked followed by US citizens at 3.5%, he said.
Other Great Walks have also opened for bookings this week.
