This 278ha wetland is a remnant of the old Waiau River and is owned by the Waiau Fisheries and Wildlife Habitat Enhancement Trust.
With 9km of walkways, the wetland is managed for the benefit of fish (both native fish and introduced trout) and waterfowl as well as protected birds species, to mitigate and remedy the adverse effects of the Manapouri Hydroelectric Power Scheme
