I have a background in General Practice and 15 years experience as Medical Officer of Health in Southland and Otago so I’m familiar with many of the health issues in our communities. I think this experience would help the new Board, which faces many challenges and will need to work as an effective team.
If elected, here are five priorities I’ll be working towards:
- A stronger emphasis on preventing illness and keeping people well, including cancer prevention, the factors that contribute to poor mental health, and healthy housing.
- Better engagement with communities on the primary and community based health services needed, especially in small centers and high growth areas.
- Working towards easier access to services to reduce inequities in health outcomes as these are unfair and preventable.
- A continued focus on quality and safety of all health care services.
- Sustainable health care services
