James Hanan's Temple of Arts & Science, 130 Dee Street, first floor upstairs Invercargill, 9810
Hanan Gallery, based in a Victorian building and built by Irishman James Hanan for his Temple of Arts & Science opened 14th August 1878.
It was Invercargill’s first observatory, also used for concerts, and as a lecture theatre - particularly for Hanan’s lectures on astronomy, geology, mineralogy and anatomy.
Hanan wanted his Temple to be an ‘educational facility of learning and instruction, with lectures and displays on the most valuable branches of knowledge’.
